HERE'S A snapshot of a Santa Cruz Superlight that Mark Adriance broke on November 12, 2004. The bike began making some odd cracks and pings toward the end of a robust three-hour ride, and when Mark got to the bottom he discovered the down tube had broken and severed almost all the way around. There was only about a quarter inch of good tube left holding it together. The break shows in this photo as a white line through the "S" and the "A" in Santa Cruz.
Mark is a strong technical rider who weighs about 190 pounds. His Superlight is two and a half years old, and has been ridden hard -- but not abused -- mostly on Galbraith. Click here for a pic of what this bike looked like when it was brand new.
Superlight owners take note: the break occured in line with the upper of the two holes drilled on the inside of the frame for the water bottle cage.
